FAQ

How do I become a firefighter?
Do you have what it takes to put others before yourself? Integrity, honesty, courage, selflessness, being a team player, compassion, commitment and competence. The knowledge and competence will come from training to ensure the job is done safely and effectively. There are dozens of training courses including fire suppression, EMS, officer, instructor, leadership, hazardous materials, specialized rescue and beyond. Each fire department has their own training requirements, and they will determine any training that will be required of you. Check with your department's recruiter for more information.
How do I take classes at the SC Fire Academy?
In most cases, you cannot take any training with the South Carolina Fire Academy until you are affiliated with a South Carolina fire service agency, either as a paid employee or volunteer. Once you become affiliated with a South Carolina fire service agency, your training officer will determine which classes you take and ensure your registration in them. There are some specific courses where students can enroll as Open Enrollment, with no department affiliation. For more information on these, please contact the SCFA Deputy Superintendent.
How do I get a Fire Portal account?
Once you become affiliated with a South Carolina fire service agency, either as a paid employee or as a volunteer, they will add you to their official department roster on the Fire Portal and create an account for you. If you are currently affiliated with a South Carolina fire service agency but do not have a Fire Portal account, please speak to your Fire Chief/Training Officer.
How do I reset my Fire Portal account email and/or password?
If you are locked out of your Fire Portal account due to an old email, please speak to your Fire Chief/Training officer and have him/her to update your email address on your account.
